KEY POINTS:
Two police officers were hospitalised after being attacked in one of several incidents blamed on drunkenness in Christchurch over the weekend.
One officer received a dislocated jaw and the other had heavy bruising and lacerations while they carried out check on a Colombo St bar on Saturday night, Christchurch police central area commander Inspector Gary Knowles said today.
They were treated in hospital and were at home nursing their injuries.
A doorman was pepper-sprayed during the incident and was to appear in Christchurch District Court today.
Mr Knowles said police reported a large number of drunken women on city streets over the weekend.
"Most were in their late teens, early 30s age group, but one woman in her 40s abused me for not being allowed back in a bar at 4am," he said.
Many women were so intoxicated they couldn't stand up and were unable to give their address to taxis called by police to take them home.
"When women are drunk like this they have no control and are extremely vulnerable," Mr Knowles said.
"They easily become victims of assault or rape and have no idea what has happened to them."
