A motorist drove a car into a policeman at a roadside checkpoint, leaving the officer with injuries to his legs, face and arms.
Police said the Hawkes Bay policeman was hit during a roadside checkpoint at about 12.30 this morning.
The driver sped off and crashed 2km away.
"The officer was working as part of a team breath testing drivers near the Farndon Road, State Highway 2 intersection. A vehicle has turned into Farndon Road, crossed over the centre line markings hitting the officer," police said in a statement.
The policeman was hospitalised overnight with grazing and gashes to his legs, face and arms.
