A police officer was helped by two members of the public after being attacked by two men in Hamilton today.
Police were called to Grey Street by people worried about a group of about 20 people loitering near a shop about 8.30am, Hamilton City Area Commander Inspector Greg Nicholls said.
"Just after 9.30am one member of this group approached a police constable and attempted to start a fight with him. He went away without incident, but returned a few minutes later and tried again, at which time he was arrested," Mr Nicholls said.
Another person ran to help the man and jumped on the officer's back but two people ran to the officer's aid.
Police back-up arrived shortly after and two men were taken into custody.
