A police officer has been bitten on the neck and leg by a Gisborne man this morning.
Senior Sergeant Maui Aben said police were called to Dalrymple Road, Gisborne around 8.20pm following a report of a disturbance at an address.
At the address the officer was confronted by a 26-year-old man who threatened and then attacked one of the officers.
"The attack was sudden and violent," Mr Aben said. "One of my staff was punched in the face and then bitten on the neck and leg. The bites have broken skin so infection is a concern. As we all know human bites are worse than dog bites."
The officer has been treated at Gisborne hospital and since been released.
