KEY POINTS:
A police constable was punched in a courtroom attack in Invercargill yesterday.
The Southland Times reported the punch by Wade James McLaren, 18, who had appeared on burglary and theft charges, sent Constable Todd Utteridge to Southland Hospital.
Mr Utteridge, who was standing beside the dock, dropped to the floor after McLaren struck him in the face.
Police prosecutor Penny Stratford and court staff rushed his aid before Judge Dominic Flatley cleared Invercargill District Court, and police back-up arrived a few minutes later.
Mr Utteridge was checked at Southland Hospital and released.
A discussion about bail had been taking place before the assault.
Invercargill police said it was likely a charge would result from the incident.
