KEY POINTS:
Waikato police have taken the unusual move of announcing a weapons amnesty, hoping to recover 121 guns stolen from a Coromandel Peninsula house.
The house of gun collector John Mabey, near Hot Water Beach, was burgled in July.
Burglars took 113 pistols, six submachine guns and two military-style semiautomatic rifles .
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Nicholls said police were taking the unusual step of offering amnesty from prosecution for anyone who brought in any of the firearms taken during the robber y.
"People in possession of restricted firearms from this collector may be unaware they have been reported stolen," he said.
Police were concerned the weapons could end up on the black market and a large team was investigating the case.
The amnesty will last until September 30.
