KEY POINTS:
Police have named a woman who died when the car she was driving plunged into the Buller River at Westport yesterday.
The body of Westport beneficiary Debbie Florence Tiplady, 45, was recovered about 9pm yesterday by a police dive squad team from Wellington.
Ms Tiplady's Ford Telstar car was seen to veer off the road near the mouth of the river just after 11am yesterday. There were no other occupants.
Senior Sergeant Geoff Scott, of Westport police, said today a file was being prepared for a coroner's inquest.
A local man fishing for snapper at the end of the breakwater heard the car coming.
"It was travelling pretty fast," Jack Williams said. "I didn't see it go in, it sank pretty quick. By the time I got up there it was gone."
