KEY POINTS:
Police have named the woman killed in a head-on collision near Pukekohe, 52km south of Auckland, last night.
She was 18-year-old Megan Johanna Jeffries.
Ms Jeffries was travelling on Patumahoe Road, several kilometres west of Pukekohe, about 10pm last night when her car collided with the vehicle of a 17-year-old, Senior Sergeant Rob Arnold said.
The man suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries to his lower body, he said.
"Both were trapped and had to be freed by the local fire service - Megan was worked on for over an hour but she was pronounced dead at the scene."
Mr Arnold said it was not yet clear if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
"The weather conditions were drizzly and so the road was wet but we haven't finished the scene examination," he said.
"Testing will be done to determine both those matters."
