Police launched a homicide inquiry after being called to the apartment in Winchester St by ambulance services shortly on Tuesday afternoon.
Police today described the 23-year-old man who alerted police as being "at the centre of the homicide investigation".
They said he was expected to be discharged from Middlemore Hospital where he had been treated for a serious injury to his hand later today and would then be formally spoken to by investigators.
Police have notified Ms Ren's next of kin of her death and said some were travelling from China to Auckland over the next few days.
The scene examination at the apartment where Ms Ren is believed to have been killed is ongoing and expected to be completed tomorrow afternoon.
