KEY POINTS:
Police have named the two people killed in car accidents over the weekend.
Billie Temaiti Campbell, 26, of Kawerau, was killed when his car left the road and crashed into a culvert about 11am on Saturday.
He died instantly and his passenger, a 20-year-old woman, suffered moderate injuries.
Police said Mr Campbell may have survived had he been wearing a seatbelt.
Initial investigations showed the car was travelling too fast and the driver was breaching his licence conditions.
Police were investigating whether alcohol was a factor after several bottles of beer were found in the car.
Miriam Te Aroha Konui, also known as Miriam Paurini, 43, of Taumarunui, died after her car collided with a truck on the Piriaka overbridge on State Highway 4, 11km south of Tauramunui, about 4pm yesterday.
The truck driver received minor injuries.
