Wairoa police today named a man and a woman who died when their car rolled down a bank near the town on Saturday.
They were Mihi Jane Pomfret, 46, of Wairoa, and Toria Te Kakau Edwards, 38, also from the Wairoa area.
The pair were thrown from their southbound car on State Highway 2, south of the town, about 6pm when the vehicle failed to take a bend and rolled down a three metre bank.
The other occupant of the car, 40-year-old Gordon Andrew Tukaki, also from Wairoa, was seriously injured and is currently in intensive care at Gisborne Hospital.
Police are also investigating a fatal motorcycle crash on Bush Road, at Pipiroa, southwest of Thames, late yesterday morning.
One man died, and police said it was thought no other vehicle was involved. The dead man's name was expected to be released later today.
