Police have named the tramper who died in Arthur's Pass national park on Saturday.
He was Dieter Knoblich, 39, of Munich, Germany.
Mr Knoblich's body was discovered by searchers about 1.30pm on Saturday at the bottom of a gorge on Bridal Veil Creek.
The man had been reported missing to police earlier that day after failing to return from a one-day tramp.
Mr Knoblich was travelling alone and is believed to have been in New Zealand since early March, police said in a statement.
