KEY POINTS:
Police have released the names of two people who died in a crash near Whangamata, on the Coromandel Peninsula, on Saturday.
They were Daryl Stewart Smith, 26, of Hamilton; and Bruce Thomas Mathie, 25, of Auckland.
The crash occurred on State Highway 25 near Whangamata, 3km north of the Opoutere turn-off.
Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. The two motorcyclists had been riding together in a group before they collided head-on as one allegedly tried to pass a car.
A man killed in a crash on Friday afternoon in Waikato has also been named.
He was Michael Clifford Gingles, 36, of Napier.
Mr Gingles' car crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming truck on State Highway 1B near Taupiri. The truck driver was not injured in the crash.
