Two teenagers killed in a Southland car crash last night were passengers in the same car.
Tori Jean Wilson, 15, from Mataura, and Isaac John Anderson, 19, from Gore, were killed when their car collided with a station wagon on Wyndham Rd, between Wyndham and Mataura, about 5.20pm, Constable Rob Camden of Wyndham police said.
The occupants of both vehicles were trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by emergency services, he said.
Both Ms Wilson and Mr Anderson died at the scene.
The drivers were taken to Kew Hospital in Invercargill.
Mr Camden said one driver was due to be released today but the other remained in critical condition.
The crash was being investigated by the serious crash unit and the cause was not yet known, he said.
