One of the four people who died on the roads at the weekend was killed the day after his birthday.
Garth Collins of Lower Hutt, who had just turned 30, was killed when his van crossed the Desert Road centre line in the central North Island, and collided with a truck on Saturday night.
The road had been closed for a period on Saturday and conditions were poor with rain, gusty winds and ice on the road, Sergeant Dave Frazer of Taupo police said.
Police have also named the person who died when two cars collided north of Auckland early yesterday.
She was 49-year-old Hazel Margaret Paul, known as Maggie, from the Far North.
The crash was at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Centennial Park Rd in Wellsford, about 80km north of Auckland, just before 5am, police said.
Police have not been able to formally identify a woman hit by a car in the Auckland suburb of Point Chevalier on Sunday night, until family arrive into the country from Australia.
It appeared the woman was run over trying to cross Great North Road, by a car which was turning into a driveway, police communications Inspector Lance Burdett said.
Caleb William Church of Rangiora, 27km north of Christchurch, was killed when his car crossed the centre line and crashed into a four wheel drive on Sunday.
The accident happened on Lineside Road, near Kaiapoi, shortly after 5pm.
