Police have named a man who was shot dead at a house north of Auckland last night.
He was Gene Patrick Atkins, a 28-year-old concrete layer from Orewa.
A 30-year-old painter who lived at the house where the shooting took place was arrested soon after the incident and today appeared in North Shore District Court.
He entered no plea to a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until January 23.
Police said M r Atkins had been shot shortly before 11pm following a dispute with the accused.
Forensic staff remained at the address in Redvale, Rodney, today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby from the North Shore police said it could be a few days before police decided whether to lay further, more serious charges.
