Police have named the 39-year-old Motueka man who was killed when his car hit a tree in the Tasman district early today.
He was Darryl Graeme Ward.
The crash happened shortly before 3am on the inland highway south of Motueka .
Mr Ward man lost control of his Subaru on a bend at Lower Moutere before hitting the tree, Motueka police Sergeant Rob Crawford said.
He was the sole occupant of the car and was found dead at the scene.
An investigation into the crash was under way, Mr Crawford said.
