The man who died in police custody over the weekend has been named as William David Bircumshaw from Rotorua.
Mr Bircumshaw, 52, was found on Saturday in the City focus area of Rotorua and he was believed to be intoxicated. Police were called to assist the ambulance staff and he was transported to the police custody hub, where staff became concerned about his ell being, had him assessed by a doctor and called an ambulance. His condition deteriorated and police staff commenced CPR.
Following a post mortem yesterday the death is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
Police are continuing to investigate his death on behalf of the Coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified; which is standard procedure.
