KEY POINTS:
Police have named the man killed after a high speed crash in central Hamilton yesterday.
Clay Peter Bowsher, 30, died when he lost control of his white 1996 Nissan Skyline as it travelled north along Anglesea St shortly after 3am yesterday.
A Hamilton police spokesman said the car skidded into the forecourt of a Honda car dealership causing several thousand dollars worth of damage.
Mr Bowsher and a passenger in the front seat, had to be cut out of the car by fire-fighters before both were transported to Waikato Hospital by ambulance, he said.
The car had been involved in a pursuit earlier, lasting up to 15 seconds, which police abandoned six blocks south of the crash site, he said.
Police described the car's speed as "ridiculous".
The Police Complaints Authority are investigating the crash.
Waikato Road Policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman said police were appealing for a pedestrian nearly run down by the Skyline near Collingwood St to come forward.
"We're also keen to hear from those people who witnessed the Skyline doing a burnout on Hood St shortly before 3am.
"The initial investigation of the scene by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit is nearing completion," he said.
