Police have named a man who died when he fell 100m into the Tutaekuri River after attending a concert at the Sacred Hill Winery in Napier at the weekend.
Kenneth Hughes, 47, was seen falling from the edge of a bluff about 10.30pm, as concertgoers were heading home from the Puketapu venue.
Emergency services mounted a rescue effort, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that Mr Hughes had to climb over a timber and wire fence to reach the cliff and it was unclear why he had done so.
Mr Hughes was one of about 2000 people who attended the More FM Winery Tour show, featuring New Zealand music icons Bic Runga, Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn.
His daughter, Bonnie, said he had been a great music lover, and had gone to this month's Mission Concert to see Jimmy Barnes.
"That was a real highlight for him. He was crying he was into it so much. He just loved his music," Miss Hughes said.
