KEY POINTS:
A man whose body was found in a central Hamilton courtyard at the weekend died from a head injury, police said today.
The body of Lance Charles Kingi, 27, of Hamilton, was found on Saturday night in an area bordering SkyCity casino, an apartment building and carpark, and two bars.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Nicholls said the death was being treated as suspicious.
"The preliminary findings of the post-mortem were that the cause of death was from blunt trauma to the head," he said.
"The focus of our inquiry is to determine how that injury occurred."
He said the inquiry team had an open mind about how Mr Kingi received the injury.
Police were called to a courtyard at the rear of the old Riverbank Mall about 6.30pm on Saturday.
It was at this point that the scene was sealed and the police investigation began.
However, Mr Nicholls said inquiries had established that Mr Kingi's body was seen by other people before this.
"As part of our investigation, we have spoken to a wide range of people that frequent the area including the nightclub and bar crowd," he said.
"We're speaking to anyone and everyone, and want speak to anyone who can shed any light on the victim's movements prior to his body being discovered."
Mr Nicholls said Mr Kingi was known to frequent the central city area and police want to build up a picture of his movements and whom he might have been in contact with before his death.
He said anyone with information should call Hamilton police on 07-8586200.
