Police have released the name of the man whose body was found lying face down in a Hamilton street early today, but have still to establish the cause of death.
He was Russell John Frew, 47, of Hamilton.
Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Page said this afternoon police were waiting for the results of the post mortem and the scene remained cordoned off.
Mr Frew's body was found by passers-by at the intersection of Mill and Victoria Streets in the northern suburb of Whitiora around 2.40am.
Mr Page said that he could not rule out that Mr Frew was the victim of a hit-and-run but he would not confirm what injuries he sustained, saying that would be part of the post mortem.
"Much of the investigation is focused on establishing what his last movements were, who he was with and where he was going.
"At this stage, while the cause of death remains unknown, we need to get a good understanding of what the scene can tell us, in the event that this is more serious than first expected."
He said police were appealing for any witnesses to contact 07 858 6200.
