KEY POINTS:
Police have released the name of the woman killed in a head-on smash near Dunedin early this morning.
She was 45 year-old Dunedin resident Clare Patricia Stedman.
Sergeant Chris George says she was driving a Nissan when she collided head-on with a station-wagon on State Highway One north of the Waihola Bridge just after midnight. The three occupants of the station-wagon were taken to Dunedin Hospital.
Sergeant Chris George says the driver is in a serious condition, and the two passengers have moderate injuries.
The road is expected to be closed until at least midday.
