Northland police have established the identity of an eastern European man who flew from Christchurch to Whangarei last week, took a taxi from the airport to Marsden Pt deepwater port, jumped into the sea and drowned.
He was Milos Sedmera, 56, a Czech national.
Constable Gavin Cyprian said Mr Sedmera had told a taxi driver at Whangarei airport last Wednesday he wanted to be taken to deep water so he could throw a memento, given to him by a friend in Timaru, into the water. Mr Sedmera had been in New Zealand for about two years.
