Thames Coromandel police have confirmed they are looking into an alleged sexual assault videoed by students at Whitianga's Mercury Bay Area School.
The Herald on Sunday yesterday reported a female foreign exchange student, who was comatose at a party, was sexually assaulted by a boy while another boy filmed him.
The video was then said to have been passed among other students at the school.
Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes said police had not received a complaint in relation to the incident and first became aware of it after the Herald on Sunday story.
"We are investigating the allegations to assess the veracity of them and won't be in a position to comment further as we simply don't know what has happened at this point," Mr Hughes said.
Mercury Bay Area School has a roll of around 780 students and is under statutory management after a string of complaints from parents and others in the community.
