KEY POINTS:
Police are looking for a "boyracer-type" car following a fire-lighting spree last weekend.
Detective Sergeant Brett Calkin said police believed the car was linked to eight brush and scrub fires which were lit on roadsides on the city's outskirts.
Patches of toitoi, grass and hay were set alight on Kelvin Grove, James Line, Napier Road and State Highway 56, between midnight on Saturday and 2am on Sunday.
Mr Calkin said someone was seen getting into the passenger seat of a white car, which sped away from one of the fires seconds after it started.
Police said the car was a white 1980s hatchback with a turbo engine and down-turned exhaust pipe.
He said police were relying heavily on help from the public.
Anyone with information about the fires has been asked to call the Palmerston North police on (06) 351 3600.
