KEY POINTS:
Law and order authorities have started an Auckland-wide blitz to arrest 3000 people who failed to appear in court.
Police launched Operation Round-up - a joint project with the Ministry of Justice, Department of Corrections and Child Youth and Family - with the warning that many were still committing crimes.
Other affected agencies are receiving daily briefings so they can manage the operation's impact on their work. Police numbers have been boosted for the crackdown which spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty denied would put more pressure on prisons.
There was no guarantee any of those arrested would be remanded in custody because that was a matter for the presiding judge or JPs when they finally appeared in court.
"I would suspect only a tiny portion of our target will be remanded in custody," Hegarty said.
