Fiji police are expected today to finish investigating the death of a New Zealand newlywed who died after a boat propeller hit her on the head while she was snorkelling.
A spokesman told the Herald yesterday that police officers had travelled to the island of Matamanoa, in the Mamanuca group about 30km west of Nadi, to investigate.
Rebecca Stockwell, 27, died from head injuries on Friday after she was hit by an aluminium boat that was motoring into the resort.
A 27-year-old casual labourer was driving the boat at the time of the accident.
The Blenheim woman was on her honeymoon with husband Hayden Stockwell. The pair had married in New Zealand on November 24 and arrived in Fiji the day before the accident.
Mrs Stockwell was airlifted to Lautoka Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Family members who travelled to Fiji are expected back in New Zealand tomorrow and have said through a spokesman that they will make a statement on Friday.
Mrs Stockwell's employer, Mark Stevenson of First National Real Estate, and her friends have been asked by the family not to comment in the meantime.
Mrs Stockwell, who studied commerce at Canterbury University after attending Marlborough Girls' College, sold houses for the company.
New Zealander Brad Johnstone, who owns a resort in the Mamanuca island group, says he has never heard of such an accident involving a tourist in the decade he has lived there.
The Matamanoa resort is run by Patrick Wong, the chairman of the Fiji Visitors Bureau, who could not be reached for comment.
