A teenager is dead after a car crashed into a tree in Te Puke last night and police now want information about a second car that may have been at the scene.
An 18-year-old man from Te Puke, about 20km southeast of Tauranga, was dead and another Te Puke man of the same age was fighting for his life after the crash in the main street about 9.30pm, acting Senior Sergeant John Hicks, of Tauranga police, said today.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash and early indications were that speed was a contributing factor.
Investigators would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a white Honda Civic hatchback leaving the scene immediately after the crash, Mr Hicks said.
Details of the deceased were not being released until family members had been notified.
