KEY POINTS:
Police hunting a man who raped a teenage girl in a central Auckland park have released more details and a sketch of the attacker.
The attack happened after the 18-year-old high school student became separated from her friends and fell asleep on a bench in Myers Park early on Saturday morning.
"She was later woken by her attacker who forced her into a more secluded area of the park - most likely near the Mayoral Drive end - where she was raped and sexually assaulted," Detective Sergeant Andy King from the Auckland City District adult sexual assault team said.
He said the victim had now been able to give a clearer description of her attacker.
He was a skinny Maori in his early 20s, about 165cm tall.
He had short black hair, a short beard and moustache and acne on his forehead. He wore a black or dark blue bucket hat, a large white t-shirt, a black zip-up hoodie with dark baggy trousers and was carrying a small, black camera-case style bag.
Mr King said the attack was prolonged and he urged anyone with information about the attacker or the assault to contact him on 09 302 6611.
