KEY POINTS:
Police have released an Identikit picture of the man who attempted to abduct a 10-year-old girl in Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa.
The girl, known as "Katie", fought off the man as he tried to force her into his four-wheel-drive as she walked along Waiora Rd two weeks ago.
Detective Sergeant Stan Brown said the Identikit was the result of a detailed description "Katie" had given the police.
"[She] demonstrated enormous courage during the incident, and her astute observation has encouraged police investigators to release an Identikit image of the offender," he said.
Police are still keen to hear from anybody who may have seen the man's 4WD.
Mr Brown said the public's response to the car's description had been disappointing, with only two calls received.
Police wanted information about a black four-wheel-drive with a distinctive red interior. It also had a spare tyre mounted on the rear right-hand side, covered in a black canvas-like cover.
"Someone knows this vehicle," Mr Brown said. "They will know its regular driver. We would like this driver to call us, so our inquiry can be advanced quickly.
"The victim has also told us that she saw strips of cloth already cut up inside the vehicle. This is concerning and it confirms the sinister criminal intent linked to this attempted abduction. This offender needs to be found."
The offender is described as between 180cm and 185cm tall with black hair and some hair on his chin. He was wearing jeans and a black jacket with white writing on the sleeves.
