KEY POINTS:
Police are warning parents to make sure their children know the perils of stranger danger after a 13-year-old girl was abducted from an Auckland suburb and sexually assaulted.
Detective Sergeant Megan Goldie said the girl was walking along West Coast Road by the Glen Eden shops on Saturday afternoon when she was approached by a man driving a small silver car.
He asked the girl for directions and then insisted that she get into his car and show him the place that he was looking for.
Ms Goldie said the girl was driven towards the Titirangi, Laingholm and Woodlands Park areas and was physically and sexually assaulted in the car.
She was also threatened during her 45-minute ordeal which ended when she was dropped near the intersection of Woodvale Rd and Ambler Ave.
The girl ran to a friend's house, where police were called.
Police have appealed for information from the public, describing the girl as slim with distinctive coloured, long straight hair.
She wore blue jeans and a light jacket.
Miss Goldie said the car used in the abduction was described as a small to medium sized silver sporty car.
The seat coverings were black fabric and the vehicle was believed to be an automatic with electric windows and was in a very tidy condition inside and out, she said.
A large number of keys were attached to the ignition key along with a driver's licence in a plastic sleeve.
The man was described as a Pacific Islander with good English but with a noticeable accent, she said.
He was about 183cm tall, of large or fat build, unshaven and aged between 35 to 45 years old.
Ms Goldie said police could not rule out that the man may have struck before.
She appealed to a anyone knowing of people who had been approached in a similar way or of any other similar incidents to come forward.
Miss Goldie said parents should reaffirm to their children the importance of keeping themselves safe and report any approaches by strangers or persons not known to them.
Any information can be passed to the Waitakere Police on 09 8390600.
