Police were led on a car chase through Wellington streets by two men who would not stop early today.
Wellington police Senior Sergeant Tony Smith said the 15-minute chase began at 3.20am when a car would not stop for police in the central city.
Police followed the car to suburban Owhiro Bay at speeds of up to 100kmh before the car returned to the city via the suburb of Melrose where it hit a bank.
Before police got to the car it took off again and returned to the central city where the two men got out and ran away.
Mr Smith said police were checking to see if the car was stolen. He said speeds for most of the chase were around 50kmh to 60kmh and were not dangerous. There was little other traffic on the roads at that time.
Inquiries were continuing.
