KEY POINTS:
Police have issued an image of a man they believe can help them with their investigation of a brutal attack in which a teenage girl was sexually assaulted and a boy knocked unconscious
Detective Sergeant Sean Hyland-Mills is encouraging the man to contact police.
"He could have vital information that will enable our investigations into the brutal and violent assaults of these two young persons to be considerably advanced," Mr Hyland-Mills.
The attack has been described by police as "vicious and callous".
Police have previously said the offender was believed to have been armed with a knife when he broke into a business on Great North Rd in Henderson in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
Mr Hyland-Mills said last week that there was a struggle before the boy was knocked unconscious and the girl was sexually assaulted for about 30 minutes.
Police issued a description of the attacker, describing him as a fat Maori or Pacific Islander with a double chin and short curly hair. He said the man was wearing a white hoodie with a leather vest underneath.
Mr Hyland-Mills said the man was seen in the Henderson area before the attack.
He told NZPA last week that police were working through possible suspects.
"We would hate to think something like this might happen again. We don't believe it will but anything could happen with these sorts of people.
"If he is prepared to do that, what else could happen?" Mr Hyland-Mills said.
He said anyone with information should contact Waitakere CIB on 09 839 0653.
