Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a primary school in Gisborne this morning, which damaged the library and a staff resource room.
Senior station officer Richard Jefferies from the Gisborne Fire Service said it was not yet known what caused the blaze at Kaiti School.
"Police are following a few leads but at this stage it is looking suspicious," he told NZPA.
Three fire crews were needed to subdue the fire in the ceiling and roof of the stand-alone two-room block.
The roof was destroyed and the rest of the building suffered smoke and water damage
Mr Jefferies said one crew appliance remained at the scene to dampen down hotspots.
