Police are investigating just how a Gisborne house fire started last night.
The blaze took hold at a flat in Alice Street, Kaiti, shortly before ten o'clock on Friday night.
Four fire crews were needed to put out the blaze. Crews were at the scene for nearly three hours and managed to save the house from complete destruction.
Fire safety investigators are working to determine the cause and police are also investigating.
