Police investigating girl's death

Waikato police are investigating the death of a 22-month-old girl who was taken to hospital in a critical condition yesterday.

Emergency services were called to a house on Studholme St in Morrinsville about 1pm yesterday and the girl was flown to Waikato Hospital, where she died overnight.

The emergency services staff queried the girl's injuries as they could have been the result of a possible assault, said Inspector Lance Burdett of police northern communications.

Police are now awaiting the results of a post mortem examination and death has been referred to the coroner.
