Police have called a trio of offenders accused of threatening a man and a woman with a gun "cowardly" organised criminals.
Three men with gang connections threatened a man and a woman with a firearm at a Church Street house in Masterton just after 11pm last night, police said.
Detective Inspector Paul Basham said the man was assaulted as the woman escaped the house and alerted a neighbour.
Armed police were called to another beating outside a Colombo Street house soon afterward, he said.
"A male was taken to hospital with moderate injuries, believed to be as a result of the beating."
Mr Basham said the incidents had elements of organised crime and violence.
"The Wairarapa Police has a zero tolerance for this type of cowardly anti-social behaviour."
Scene examinations were being carried out the Church Street house and the Colombo Street properties today.
Further enquiries were expected to identify the offenders involved, police said.
To give information on the incidents, phone Wairarapa police on 06 370 0300 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
