Rumours circulated for months before police started investigating an alleged HIV predator.
A 40-year-old bisexual man is accused of knowingly infecting his sexual partners with HIV.
Police are investigating the claims, which first surfaced in December last year.
HIV activist and researcher Michael Stevens says it took a while before he found out it was anything more than just rumour.
He says about seven people are believed to be infected, and only one person has come forward to police.
Mr Stevens says this type of behaviour is bizarre and fortunately rare.
Auckland's gay community is naming the man because of the risk he poses.
The name is being circulated among gay people.
Six police officers are now working on the case.
Although there has been only one formal complaint, reports suggest at least half a dozen other young victims, both male and female, are not yet ready to come forward.
