Police are investigating the death of a child in central Christchurch this morning.

Police are reportedly investigating the death of a child in central Christchurch this morning.

Police attended the scene at 5.11am.

Emergency services were called to a property in Fitzgerald Ave at 5.30am.

"This is an unfortunate event for all involved," Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said.

"The police team have been working through this sad event overnight and it has been difficult for those attending."

Police are liaising with the coroner.

"The immediate family are being supported and the investigation will continue in the coming days," Sweeney added.

"Until the wider family are advised, no further information is available."
