Police investigate unsolved Wellington sex attacks

A special squad of detectives has been assembled to investigate a series of unsolved sex attacks in Wellington.

The team is looking again at eight cases from the past 18 months -- all but one within a 3km radius in Wellington City -- which may be linked.

In each case the victim was attacked from behind in the early hours of the morning and sexually assaulted, many of them violently.

Police said they wanted to know whether the attacks were linked and how many offenders they might be looking at.

"Our motivation is to capture and send to jail these brutal rapists," CIB head Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich told The Dominion Post.
