Police are still investigating a man's claims that he was attacked and bundled into the boot of a car in Taranaki at the weekend.
Senior Sergeant Shaun Keenan, of Stratford police, said the main focus of the inquiry was to establish the veracity of the 21-year-old Palmerston North man's story.
They had launched an appeal for any possible witnesses but as yet none had come forward, he told the Taranaki Daily News.
The heavily intoxicated man was evicted from the Coronation Hotel in Eltham about 10pm on Friday.
He told police that he had been assaulted by possibly two men near High St, bundled into the boot of a car and driven around the streets for several hours.
He was then taken out of the boot and assaulted a second time before being left.
He was able to get himself to an Eltham house where he had been staying and friends called police.
Police said the man was treated for injuries, consistent with an assault, at Hawera Hospital.
