Police investigate death of man, 79, found dead at Selwyn Huts in Canterbury

Selwyn Huts, where the body of a 79-year-old resident was found yesterday, is a popular fishing spot.

The body of an elderly man has been found in a small Canterbury fishing community.

The 79-year-old's body was found at a house at Selwyn Huts, near the mouth of the Selwyn River, at around 5pm yesterday by a member of the public.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Ford said the man, who lived at the property, had not been seen for about two weeks.

Ford said the man could've been dead "for a number of days".

Police say next of kin have been informed.

A post mortem to determine cause of death is being carried out this morning.

The death will then be referred to the coroner.

There are no indications that the death is suspicious at this stage, but Ford said police will await the results of the post mortem.

Selwyn Huts is a small community popular with fishermen.
