KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a middle-aged woman in central Hastings last night.
Constable Sally Patrick of Hastings CIB said today the 44-year-old victim was walking along Heretaunga Street West after withdrawing money from an ATM about 8.45pm when approached by a man in a dark maroon Ford sedan.
He asked her if she wanted a lift but she refused and continued walking.
Ms Patrick said the man grabbed the woman from behind, but she fought him off and managed to escape.
The man drove off, nearly colliding with another vehicle.
Ms Patrick said the woman described her attacker as Polynesian, 40-45-years-old, 182cm tall, of a solid build and with dark bushy hair.
His four-door Ford sedan had the words "Racing Ford" handpainted in blue on the rear drivers side panel.
Ms Patrick said police would like to hear from anyone who knew anything about the incident, she said.
