Auckland police are investigating after a man's body was found at a Grey Lynn church last night.
Police have named the man as 58-year-old Manamana Heti, also known as Stephen Heti.
Heti lived at the property, which had a residential unit attached to a church.
Neighbours said Mr Heti, an invalid's beneficiary, was a nice, harmless man who rarely ventured far from the property or the cul-de-sac of flats across the street.
Ambulance staff called police to the Great North Road property shortly before 11pm yesterday, where officers found Mr Heti's body.
Police secured the scene overnight and are in the process of removing Mr Heti's body from the address. It will undergo a post-mortem examination this morning.
Police said another resident of the address had been spoken to, as had visitors to the property last night.
Scene and post-mortem examinations are expected to clarify how Mr Heti died and whether there were any suspicious circumstances, police said.
