Police are investigating the shooting of a large number of cattle on a farm at Hicks Bay on the East Cape.
Thirty of the beasts have been shot on Matakaoa Station.
Ruatoria Sergeant Regan Horsfall says those responsible made no attempt to cut up the dead animals for meat and the carcasses were left to rot.
Sergeant Horsfall is appealing for information from the East Coast community to help catch the culprit.
