Wellington city police will be drafting in extra officers when the Barmy Army hits the city next month.
Around 25,000 British Lions fans are expected for the games against Wellington on June 15 and the All Blacks on July 2.
"The week leading up to the test will be a big one in the city," Inspector Paul Berry, Wellington Area Police Operations Manager, said in a statement.
"We know people want to have a good time, but we want them to do so safely."
He said extra staff from across the district will be working in and around the city, but particularly around the period of the second test.
Special attention will be given to traffic and alcohol related issues with checkpoint operations planned, strict enforcement of liquor licensing, and a "satellite" police command base operating from Courtenay Place over the test weekend.
