Police increase patrols after Auckland Transport worker beaten in Manukau car park

Police have increased patrols in the area where an Auckland Transport support worker was beaten by a pack of teens this week.

The 25-year-old, who asked not to be named, told the Herald he was attacked by a largely female group of up to 10 near the Countdown supermarket at Manukau Westfield on Monday night.

Counties Manukau Central Inspector Adam Pyne said police are continuing to investigate the assault and have increased their presence in the area.

"We want to assure the community that we are taking this matter very seriously and have increased our patrols in the area," Pyne said.

He added police had obtained CCTV footage and were working to find the offenders.

The victim suffered a bruised and swollen face, injured leg and grazes to his arms after he was "punched and kicked" several times while lying in the car park.

"I was sitting in the driver's seat and they came to try and grab the key out of my car," he said.

"I came out of the car and at the same time three or four [more] came over and started to push me and started to punch me."

The man, who was also attacked in downtown Auckland two years ago, said he tried to run but slipped and was set upon by the mob.

"I saw a few people [watching], but no one came to help.

"I really appreciate a girl who tried to help me when I was calling police but other people were just watching the show."

A 17-year-old woman has been charged with common assault and shoplifting from a previous incident, police said.
