Police identify teens in alleged taxi attack

Police have identified the three teens who allegedly pushed an Auckland taxi driver to the ground and ripped the security camera from his car - to escape a $34 fare.

Last week police released images taken from the camera of the young people and with public help, they have been identified.

"Thanks to media coverage we have now identified the three persons involved and they are assisting us with our inquiries," said Constable Mark Stanton.

The incident occurred on October 2, only weeks after the security cameras became compulsory in taxis to improve safety for drivers following the 2010 murder of Hiren Mohini, who was stabbed to death by a passenger.

Driver Rupinder Singh picked up two teenage girls and a boy in Queen St 3.15am who asked to go to Meola Rd, in Westmere.

When they got close to the destination the male started touching the camera and asking questions about it and then asked him if they could have the taxi ride for free.

He said no and when he stopped and asked for the fare, the two girls got out of the car and started walking away, the newspaper reported.

Mr Singh got out of the car and then saw the boy had his camera. The girls then pushed him from behind, and while he was on the ground the trio ran away down Garnet Rd.
