Police have identified a man whose decomposing body was found in the Waikato town of Huntly on Tuesday.
The body of Wiremu Tamanui Awa, aged 48, of Huntly, was found in vegetation near a railway line off Shaw Street.
Mr Awa's body appeared to have been lying on the vacant land for some time and police were unsure how he died, Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Jones said.
He said police wanted to speak to anyone who had seen Mr Awa over the last couple of weeks.
"We are working closely with Mr Awa's family and we need to get as much information as we can about how he died," Mr Jones said.
"Someone must know what happened to this person and for the sake of his family, we appeal to the community of Huntly to come forward with any information about the man's death."
Police were waiting on post mortem results to help determine the cause of death.
